A few things come to mind. At sports events, the fans sing along & do the cheerleader moves spelling out- Y M C A... do they know that they are celebrating the gayest song by the gayest musical group of all time? The Husband I & caught a showing of Can't Stop The Music deep in the cable line-up this summer. Has there ever been a more demented movie, & has there ever been a gayer film with no direct reference to gaydom? What was going on in the 1970s (I can't remember through the drug haze)?
Today is the 60th birthday of RANDY JONES: actor, author, American Music Award winner & multi-platinum recording artist, the original Cowboy & a founding member of Village People. In his career spanning 4+ decades before, with & since Village People, he has sold 100 million records. Perhaps best known for his hits with the group: Macho Man, In the Navy, & Y.M.C.A, he has had 65 Gold & Platinum hits, toured worldwide, starred in Can't Stop the Music, made the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine & in 2008, garnered a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.
Village People's original member: Victor Willis (police officer), Felipe Rose (Native American), Randy Jones (cowboy), Glenn Hughes (biker), David Hodo (construction worker) & Alex Briley (GI). Originally created to target disco's primarily gay audience by featuring stereotypical gay fantasy personas, the band's popularity quickly brought them into mainstream. my favorite is In Hollywood (Everybody is a Star).
Jones is developing a new reality show about same-sex marriages: “In each location, we’re going to bring other couples that want to have same sex ceremonies or weddings. So it’s not just about me & my partner. It’s about everybody.”
The show follows Jones & his partner of 26 years- Wil Grega, as they travel to each state in America & foreign countries in an attempt to set a world record in the Guinness Book of Records for commitment ceremonies & weddings.
Jones acknowledged that not every place may welcome the idea of same sex marriage, but he has a plan for when they encounter those who do not. Sounds crazy & fun, a bit dangerous. I will be watching, although getting married once was enough for me. Good Luck, Randy... & happy birthday!
